Stimulated supercontinuum generation extends broadening limits in silicon

چکیده
We demonstrate that stimulated supercontinuum generation alleviates restrictions on spectral broadening in silicon waveguides. At telecommunications wavelengths, two-photon and free-carrier absorption typically deplete the pump before large broadening factors can be achieved. However, broadening via modulation instability (MI) can be enhanced by seeding, which also substantially improves the energy efficiency of spectral broadening in media with nonlinear loss. Coherent seeding also generates a stable output spectrum, in contrast to conventional approaches where broadening starts from noise. The combination of self-phase modulation and stimulated modulation instability generates broadening factors in excess of 40-fold at moderate intensity levels, with >15-times better energy efficiency. Broadband telecom to mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in a dispersion-engineered silicon germanium waveguide.
We demonstrate broadband supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a dispersion-engineered silicon-germanium waveguide. The 3 cm long waveguide is pumped by femtosecond pulses at 2.4 μm, and the generated supercontinuum extends from 1.45 to 2.79 μm (at the -30 dB point). The broadening is mainly driven by the generation of a dispersive wave in the 1.5-1.8 μm region and soliton fission. The SCG was mo...
متن کاملSupercontinuum generation in silicon waveguides relying on wave-breaking.
Four-wave-mixing processes enabled during optical wave-breaking (OWB) are exploited in this paper for supercontinuum generation. Unlike conventional approaches based on OWB, phase-matching is achieved here for these nonlinear interactions, and, consequently, new frequency production becomes more efficient. We take advantage of this kind of pulse propagation to obtain numerically a coherent octa...
متن کاملSupercontinuum generation in hydrogenated amorphous silicon waveguides at telecommunication wavelengths.
We report supercontinuum (SC) generation centered on the telecommunication C-band (1550 nm) in CMOS compatible hydrogenated amorphous silicon waveguides. A broadening of more than 550 nm is obtained in 1cm long waveguides of different widths using as pump picosecond pulses with on chip peak power as low as 4 W.
متن کاملCoherent supercontinuum generation in a silicon photonic wire in the telecommunication wavelength range.
We demonstrate a fully coherent supercontinuum spectrum spanning 500 nm from a silicon-on-insulator photonic wire waveguide pumped at 1575 nm wavelength. An excellent agreement with numerical simulations is reported. The simulations also show that a high level of two-photon absorption can essentially enforce the coherence of the spectral broadening process irrespective of the pump pulse duration.
متن کاملMid-infrared to telecom-band supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides.
We demonstrate the generation of a supercontinuum in a 2 cm long silicon wire by pumping the wire with mid-infrared picosecond pulses in the anomalous dispersion regime. The supercontinuum extends from 1535 nm up to 2525 nm for a coupled peak power of 12.7 W. It is shown that the supercontinuum originates primarily from the amplification of background noise. A detailed analysis of the spectral ...
